"Mae" a Pronomial Innovation of Costa Rican Spanish

Jorge Antonio Leoni de León
Director del Instituto de Investigaciones Lingüísticas de la Universidad de Costa Rica

The term “mae” evolved from a noun referring to a man (“Un mae vino a comprarme la moto”, in English “a man sold me a bike”) to a word whose uses ressemble a pronoun addressed to a class of objects (“El teléfono estaba cargado, pero el mae no encendía”, in English “the phone was charged, but the guy would’nt turn on”). In this talk I undertake all the spectrum of usages, with a special focus on their evolution during several decades. [Vortrag auf Spanisch und Englisch]

Ethos und Empathie: Interkulturelle Vergleichsstudie zur LehrerInnenbildung an der Universität Osnabrück und an der Universidad de Costa Rica

PD Dr. Susanne Müller-Using

Understanding children requires empathy and the ability to grasp the state of mind and the mood in the group, but also to see individual needs and to take them into account in pedagogical action. This requires a well-trained ability to observe, active listening and also experience in dealing with children.

Where are aspects of pedagogical ethics and empathy to be found in educational discourse? How do they relate to each other and what significance do they have for dealing with children and young people in school pedagogical situations? These questions will be examined theoretically and practically within the framework of an intercultural comparative study with Costa Rica. The study concludes with an analysis of two concepts of teacher education and an empirical study with teacher students from both universities.

Research Intern from the Universidad Técnica Nacional de Costa Rica (UTN)

Daniel Láscarez Smith is a sociologist and works as a researcher at the National Technical University of Costa Rica and is currently a research intern at the University of Osnabrück.

The internship has been developed within the framework of cooperation of the Costa Rica Center between both universities, in order to develop scientific advances in the field of technical and vocational education and training. For this reason, the Department of Vocational and Business Training of the UOS opened its doors for his work, which is guided and supervised by Prof. Dr. Dietmar Frommberger.

The objective of the internship has been to prepare a research project on the development of the technical and vocational education and training system in Costa Rica, based on the historical interaction of the social partners represented by workers, companies and the state, among others. A further goal has been the development of strategies to promote scientific relations between both universities, based on the elaboration of an academic project to be applied for in 2019.

During the internship, Daniel Láscarez Smith had the opportunity to gain experience and insight about the most important academic debates on the development of institutional governance. He was enriched by the exchange with university employees on an intellectual and human level, especially with colleagues from the Department of Professional and Business Pedagogy (BWP). This made his stay, both overall and on an institutional level, highly valuable for Costa Rica.

Seminar: Central America and the US American Migration Politics in the 20th Century

The wall on the US-South border, which was one of Donald Trump's campaign promises during last year's US election, moved Latin American migration back into the spotlight of public attention. This is a great opportunity to reflect on the historical perspective of migration to the US. In the second half of the 20th century, Central America was characterized by civil wars, violence, poverty and lack of prospects, which forced and still forces many people to flee to North America. The seminar will focus on the history of migration from Central America as well as the changes in US immigration policy and its repercussions on the Central American region.

„Values education in the University: Developing the concept of humanistic education in Costa Rica“. This is the title of the conference imparted on 27/01/2016 by Dr. Susanne Müller-Using, scientific director of the Costa Rica Center. This was the final conference as part of the interdisciplinary series of conferences „Entre las Américas / Between the Americas“ during the winter term 2015/2016. The Costa Rica Center and the Faculty of Language and Literature invited to participate on this series during this semester.

As a cultural area, the Central American region is characterized by sociopolitical and cultural conflicts, since North American and Central American political interests and ideologies often diverge. However, this cultural area situated between the two hemispheres, not only geographically but also politically, economically and not least culturally, has up to now been rather neglected by research on North America and Latin America. Hence the series of lectures "Entre las Américas / Between the Americas” for which well-known scientists specializing in research on Central America could be won. Their contributions offer different key topics within the areas of cultural, literary and political studies and examine the subjects from different points of view.
The series of lectures aims at defining the Central American region as an in-between area where different spheres of interest and control compete with each other, but also overlap and even merge. It represents a specific contribution of the cultural and literary studies at Osnabrück University to the research of the University’s interdisciplinary Costa Rica Center.
